Plot summary
David Sheff, a writer for The New York Times, has separated from his first wife, Vicki, and lives with his wife Karen and their young children, Jasper and Daisy. His teenage son Nic disappears from home and turns up two days later. David sees clear signs of drug use and takes Nic to a rehabilitation clinic. Nic makes progress, and with his doctors' agreement he moves to a halfway house. Days later he vanishes again, and David searches until he finds him on the streets. Back at the facility, Nic reveals that he has taken numerous drugs, including crystal meth.

- Timothée Chalamet was told to lose weight a couple of weeks before filming his character's "hospitalization scenes" and then rested to recover; he said there were "doctor visits" and "close calls" during the shoot.
- Director Felix van Groeningen said that more than 200 actors sent in audition tapes for the role of Nic Sheff, and that Timothée Chalamet immediately stood out.
- Cameron Crowe wrote a script from the memoirs and planned to direct; in December 2013 Mark Wahlberg was reported to be circling the role of David Sheff, with Crowe still attached to direct.
- In January 2017, Steve Carell and Will Poulter were reported as attached to star as father and son; the next month Timothée Chalamet was officially cast as Nic Sheff opposite Carell.
- Editing took seven months, during which the film was completely recut several times, and Van Groeningen brought his Belgian editor Nico Leunen to Los Angeles to reconstruct it.
- Production designer Ethan Tobman used the house from the TV series Big Little Lies as a set, making numerous alterations that included the counters.
