Plot summary
Dar, called the Beastmaster through the land of Arok, is brought before the tribunal of the warlord Arklon and sentenced to death for rebel complicity and witchcraft, since he speaks with animals. His tiger Ruh attacks the executioner before the axe can fall, the ferrets Kodo and Podo gnaw the rope from his hands, and the eagle Sharak claws at Arklon's face so that Dar escapes. Arok has been under Arklon's control since King Zed died, and the rebels who resist him gather in the East. In a canyon, Arklon's archers kill the rebel leader as he calls on the witch Lyranna to seek out Arklon's army. A beast in the swamp stops at the sight of Dar's brand and warns him that Arklon must be killed before the autumn equinox or all life in Arok will perish.

- Jim Wynorski was originally set to direct and wrote the screenplay with R. J. Robertson for producer Sylvio Tabet, but Tabet took the directing job himself and then threatened to take their writing credits off the picture.
- The sequel's opening credits read "Adapted from the Book The Beast Master by Andre Norton," but after reading the screenplay for the 1982 original, author Andre Norton had her credit removed; her agent talked her into allowing it for the sequel.
