Plot summary
Edmond Murray is an absent father, living apart from his former wife Joan Richmond and their seven-year-old son Ethan. A call reaches him as he drives through the Scottish Highlands: Ethan has gone missing from the campsite where he was staying. Edmond meets Joan at the site and briefly consoles her, then joins a search party for the boy. Inspector Roy and the police interview him, and it becomes clear that Ethan was kidnapped rather than simply lost. Edmond visits Frank, Joan's new partner, and the two begin talking.
