Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Alexander Cooper feels left out at home in suburban Los Angeles, where his older brother Anthony, his older sister Emily, and their parents, Ben and Kelly, are each absorbed in something good. His own day goes wrong: he accidentally sets fire to a notebook belonging to his crush, Becky Gibson, a classmate circulates a humiliating altered picture of him, and his friends mean to attend Philip Parker's birthday party rather than his. Finding no sympathy, he lights a candle on a homemade birthday sundae and wishes his family could know what a bad day feels like.
