Plot summary
Russell Millings spent 21 years in a California prison on a third strike, an ounce of marijuana. He comes out middle-aged into a country that changed while he was inside and finds work washing dishes in a burger restaurant. At an internet café he searches for his father, who died in 2001. Closing the restaurant one night, he finds a baby in the dumpster, a note in the bag naming her Ella. He sets out to care for her on his own.
