Biography

Francis Ford Coppola is an American filmmaker and a leading figure of the New Hollywood, born in Detroit. He directed his first feature, Dementia 13, in 1963, then made You're a Big Boy Now (1966), followed by Finian's Rainbow (1968) and later The Rain People (1970). His screenplay for Patton (1970) won him an Academy Award, and he went on to direct The Godfather (1972) and its sequel The Godfather Part II (1974), both winners of Best Picture, with the second bringing him Best Director. The Conversation (1974) and the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979) each won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Later films included Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and The Cotton Club (1984), as well as The Rainmaker (1997), The Godfather Part III (1990), The Outsiders and Rumble Fish (both 1983). He produced American Graffiti (1973) and turned to independent work with Tetro (2009), Youth Without Youth (2007), Megalopolis (2024) and Twixt (2011).

First role
Coppola's first feature film was Dementia 13 (1963). While in Ireland for The Young Racers, Corman talked him into using that movie's leftover money for a low-budget horror film. Coppola drafted it in a single night, drew on Hitchcock's Psycho, and Corman approved.
A first
Coppola says no earlier major motion picture had "Part II" in its title, and Sergei Eisenstein's two-part Ivan the Terrible influenced him. Paramount first objected to naming the movie The Godfather Part II, but its success began Hollywood's numbered-sequel tradition.
Early training
Coppola studied under director Dorothy Arzner while a graduate student, and her encouragement was later credited as pivotal to his career.
A role that slipped away
Paramount did not first ask Coppola to direct. Sergio Leone was offered the job but turned it down to make his own gangster film, Once Upon a Time in America, and Robert Evans wanted an Italian American director.
