SPOILER
The film is credited with coining the term catfishing, a type of deceptive activity in which a person creates a fake social networking presence for nefarious purposes, and it led to an MTV reality TV series, Catfish: The TV Show.SPOILER
In the film, Vince, the husband of the "catfish", tells how live cod shipped to Asia from North America arrived as mushy flesh until fishermen put catfish in the tanks to keep them active; the story originates from Pastor Chuck Swindoll.- After an audience member at the Sundance Film Festival premiere suggested that Catfish might be a "faux-documentary", Ariel Schulman dismissed the idea with mock praise for his brother's acting, and documentary-filmmaker Morgan Spurlock later called it the best fake documentary he had ever seen.
- Relativity Media has concluded that the film will never be profitable because of two lawsuits concerning songs used in it without being attributed to their creators.
- The Rogue Pictures unit of Relativity Media acquired Catfish in a bidding war with Paramount Pictures, after Brett Ratner endorsed the film to them.
