Biography

Paul Schrader is an American screenwriter, director, and film critic born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1946. He started as a critic for the Los Angeles Free Press and Cinema, and in 1972 published Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer before moving into screenwriting. His breakthrough came with Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976), and he also wrote for Scorsese on Bringing Out the Dead (1999), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Raging Bull (1980). As a director, his films include First Reformed (2017), Affliction (1997), Light Sleeper (1992), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), American Gigolo (1980), Hardcore (1979), and Blue Collar (1978). First Reformed earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He later directed The Card Counter (2021) and Master Gardener (2022), received a Golden Lion Honorary Award at Venice in 2022, and has written stage plays Berlinale and Cleopatra Club.
