Plot summary
On Christmas Eve, Andrea, Moppet and Patrick are left with Aunt Ruth while their father Matt is away for work, and she tells them a Christmas tale. It is about Nikolas, a boy whose mother has died and whose father, Joel, works as a woodcutter in the forest. The king promises a reward to anyone who can bring hope to the kingdom, so Joel joins a hunt for Elfhelm, the village of the elves, and leaves Nikolas in the care of Aunt Carlotta, who makes his life miserable. Nikolas spares a mouse he names Miika and teaches him to speak, then finds a map that confirms Elfhelm is real. He sets out for the Extreme North to bring it to his father, and in the Half Moon Forest, a reindeer he calls Blitzen lets him ride.
