Plot summary
Zone 414 is a walled city where wealthy clients pay for the company of state-of-the-art androids. The corporation behind the Zone belongs to the androids' creator Marlon Veidt and his brother Joseph, a psychologist. When Marlon's adult daughter Melissa disappears inside the city, he hires David Carmichael, a private investigator and former police detective, to bring her home without involving the police. Before the job begins, the corporation tests David, and Joseph profiles him to judge whether he can work with discretion and outside the law. David is paired with Jane, a highly advanced, self-aware robot with emotions beyond the simulated ones her work requires, who says a man keeps sending her threatening messages.
