Plot summary
When World War I breaks out, Lieutenant Geoffrey Richter-Douglas, a Scots officer whose mother came from an aristocratic Bavarian family, has spent his summers in Germany. A German spy, Stephanie, proposes that he slip away to Germany, where his family and friends are. He tells his commanding officer, Captain Whitney, about the approach, and Whitney asks him to carry out the defection and to obtain the designs of the LZ36, a new Zeppelin being built at Friedrichshafen. A British sailor shoots him in the arm so that the desertion looks real.

- During aerial filming on 18 August 1970, one of the S.E.5a replica aircraft, flown by Irish Air Corps pilot Jim Liddy, collided with the Alouette helicopter used as a camera platform; five people were killed, among them pilot Gilbert Chomat, aerial photographer Skeets Kelly and Burch Williams, brother of Hollywood producer-director Elmo Williams.
- MGM canceled Zeppelin two weeks before production, saying it would cost $5 million; producer Owen Crump found alternative financing and says he brought the film in for $1.8 million by cutting down on his overhead.
- The actor Peter Carsten was injured while shooting bayonet scenes for Zeppelin, a film whose principal photography took place in Malta.
- The film's airships were 37 ft models built from plans of the British R33 class airship, itself based on the German LZ 76 captured intact in 1916, and a replica control car was copied for closeups from the R33 car held at the Royal Air Force Museum London.
