Michael Collins
Biography
Michael Collins was an American astronaut and test pilot. He was born in Rome, where his father, a career U.S. Army officer, served as military attaché. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1952 and joined the Air Force, flying F-86 Sabre fighters in France before attending the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. In 1963 NASA chose him for its third astronaut group. His first spaceflight, Gemini 10 in 1966, involved rendezvous with two spacecraft and two spacewalks, the first time anyone had performed more than one. As command module pilot on Apollo 11 in 1969 he orbited the Moon thirty times while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed. After retiring from NASA in 1970 he directed the National Air and Space Museum and later worked for LTV Aerospace. He and his Apollo 11 crewmates were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969; in 2011 they received the Congressional Gold Medal.

A first
Michael Collins was the first person to perform more than one spacewalk, doing two during the Gemini 10 mission in 1966.
A role that slipped away
While getting ready for Apollo 11, Slayton proposed bringing Collins back into the crew sequence afterward. That would likely have led to backup commander of Apollo 14 and then commander of Apollo 17, but Collins declined, saying he had no wish to fly in space again if Apollo 11 succeeded.
Early training
Collins applied to the USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California and was accepted, becoming a member of Class 60C on August 29, 1960.
Behind the camera
Collins wrote an autobiography, Carrying the Fire, in 1974, which was praised as one of the best accounts of being an astronaut.
