Robert Hobbs

Biography

Robert Hobbs is a South African actor who grew up in the mining town of Welkom after his family left Cape Town, and he trained in speech and drama at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1993. Stage work came first, among it Macbeth for the SA State Theatre and Yasmina Reza's Life x 3, which brought him a Naledi Award nomination, and he helped found the improvisational troupe Theatresports. On screen he moved from South African television series such as Rhythm City and Inkaba to the BBC film Bravo Two Zero (1999), his breakthrough, and John Boorman's In My Country (2004), a Golden Bear nominee at Berlin. Later credits include Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema (2008), District 9 (2009), Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), Young Ones (2014) and Chappie (2015), and he had a lead voice role in the animated film Jock the Hero Dog (2011).
