Plot summary
Jamie Fitzpatrick works as a bartender and a car dealer, and Nona Alberts is a teacher. The two women live on opposite sides of the social and economic track, and both have children who are failing at an inner-city school in Pittsburgh. They join forces to take over the school and make it a place of learning. To do that they must battle the school board, the parents and the teachers union, and a bureaucracy set in traditional thinking. Evelyn Riske, the union president, resists them. Jamie and Nona also want to renew the commitment of teachers who have lost their enthusiasm for the work.
