Plot summary
On Themyscira, a young Diana is disqualified from a race after she falls from her horse and takes a shortcut, and her mother Hippolyta and aunt Antiope tell her that worthwhile things are earned honestly. Decades later, in 1984, Diana works as an anthropologist at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and keeps her heroics as Wonder Woman quiet. Barbara Ann Minerva, a shy new geologist at the museum, becomes her friend. When the FBI asks the museum to identify antiquities from a foiled robbery, the two women examine a stone bearing a Latin inscription that promises its holder one wish. Barbara, who envies Diana's confidence, and Diana, who still remembers the pilot Steve Trevor, use it. Maxwell Lord, a businessman whose oil company is failing, arrives at the museum hoping to take that stone for himself.

- A plot point in which Steve Trevor takes over another man's body, credited as "Handsome Man", drew criticism: he puts that body in danger and uses it without consent, including a scene implying sex between Diana and him.
- The choice to put the film on HBO Max the same day it opened in theaters led Warner Bros. to give its entire 2021 slate the same treatment; filmmakers, production companies and theater chains, not consulted, voiced their displeasure.
- Wonder Woman 1984 was the first film to sign up to the Producers Guild of America's guidelines for dealing with incidents of sexual harassment on set.
- Patty Jenkins modeled Pedro Pascal's villain Maxwell Lord on Bernie Madoff and Donald Trump, and said Pascal's performance drew on Gordon Gekko in Wall Street and Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor in the 1978 Superman.
- The first trailer was cut to renditions of New Order's Blue Monday, including Sebastian Böhm's remix, and was well received, but that song does not feature in the finished movie.
