Trailer

Plot summary

After her mother dies, a young woman is framed by her stepfather for her sister's murder and committed to a mental institution, where the orderly Blue Jones takes a bribe to arrange a lobotomy for her. She retreats into a fantasy in which the asylum is a brothel run by Blue and the patients are sex slaves, and she takes the name Babydoll. There she befriends Amber, Blondie, Rocket and Rocket's sister Sweet Pea. A Wise Man in a dream of feudal Japan tells her that escape requires four things: fire, a knife, a key and a map. Babydoll persuades the four to help her, dancing as a distraction while they gather what the plan requires.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sucker Punch (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Emily Browning got the lead only after Amanda Seyfried turned it down because of a scheduling clash with her HBO series Big Love. Snyder had also offered roles to Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, Emma Stone and Vanessa Hudgens while assembling the cast.
  • The supporting parts shuffled too. Wood dropped out over True Blood and her stage run in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, so Malone took Rocket, while Emma Stone declined Amber because of Easy A and Freida Pinto was considered before the role went to Jamie Chung.
  • Abbie Cornish said the cast trained six hours a day, five days a week in martial arts, swords and empty-hand choreography. Jena Malone described a daily routine of four hours of warm-ups and mixed martial arts wushu, three hours of weights, then firearms and tactical positioning, and finally pole-dancing lessons.
  • A love scene between Emily Browning and Jon Hamm was cut completely to secure a PG-13. Browning said the MPAA objected to the young woman being in control, so Zack Snyder recut it until it looked as though Hamm's character was taking advantage of her, then dropped the scene rather than send that message.
