Plot summary
Odin, king of Asgard, once led his people against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim and seized the Casket of Ancient Winters, the source of their power. In the present, his son Thor is about to be named crown prince when Frost Giants appear in Asgard's vault seeking the casket. Ignoring Odin's command, Thor takes Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three through the Bifrost to Jotunheim to confront King Laufey. Odin arrives to end the fight and, furious that Thor has shattered the truce, strips his son of his power and exiles him to Earth. There the astrophysicist Jane Foster, her intern Darcy Lewis and her mentor Erik Selvig find him in the New Mexico desert, and Thor learns that his hammer Mjolnir has landed nearby under guard.

- Guillermo del Toro was in talks to direct Thor and wanted to push it toward gritty Norse mythology with a 'dingy Valhalla' full of Vikings and mud, but he ultimately left to direct The Hobbit instead.
- Long before it became a film, Thor was developed as a television series for the network UPN, which pushed for a script and approached wrestler-actor Tyler Mane to play the title role.
- Director Matthew Vaughn rewrote Mark Protosevich's script specifically to cut the projected budget in half, from $300 million down to $150 million.
- Chris Hemsworth bulked up by 20 pounds to play Thor, but the weight gain meant his costume no longer fit at a fitting three weeks later, forcing him to switch from heavy eating to kettlebell training to maintain rather than add muscle.
- Idris Elba's casting as Heimdall drew a proposed boycott from the Council of Conservative Citizens and public debate among fans over a black actor playing a Norse god, which Elba dismissed as 'ridiculous.'
- Adriana Barraza's scenes were cut from the theatrical release during editing, and director Kenneth Branagh sent her a letter of apology; Barraza said publicly that it saddened her but that she understood scenes get cut.
- Marvel brought in real physicists, including Sean Carroll, Kevin Hand and Jim Hartle, to advise on the film's science, and their input changed Jane Foster's job from nurse to particle physicist and gave the Bifrost bridge its Einstein-Rosen bridge terminology.
