Plot summary
King Amphitryon of Tiryns adds kingdoms by conquest, and Queen Alcmene, sickened by his ambition, asks Hera for guidance. Zeus, Hera's husband, fathers a child on her, a demigod meant to save her people. Amphitryon takes the baby as his own and calls him Alcides; Alcmene alone knows his true name, Hercules. Twenty years later, Alcides loves Princess Hebe of Crete, and his older brother, Prince Iphicles, is promised her. A lion attacks the brothers, and Alcides strangles it; Iphicles claims the kill at a royal banquet, and Hebe sees through him. At that banquet Amphitryon pledges Hebe to Iphicles and sends Alcides to a campaign in Egypt.
