Plot summary

In Rosas, an island kingdom, King Magnifico and Queen Amaya rule over subjects who surrender their deepest wishes; the king seals them away and grants one each month at a ceremony. Asha, 17, interviews to become his apprentice on the day her grandfather Sabino turns 100, hoping Magnifico will grant Sabino's wish. The interview goes well until she asks for it, and the king, who calls the wish too vague, refuses her the post. Asha questions his system, but Sabino and her mother Sakina are not persuaded. She makes a wish on a star, a ball of light descends, and Star's magic lets the forest animals speak, among them Asha's goat Valentino.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Wish (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Art of Wish artbook revealed that Queen Amaya was originally going to be a villain alongside her husband King Magnifico, and that Star was originally a partially magical, glowing human character, inspired a bit by Peter Pan.
  • Several concepts and scenes were cut or altered from Wish, including a village where people write their wishes on trees and Sabino dies, a forest chase in which Star turns into several creatures to escape Queen Amaya's guards, and an alternate ending where Magnifico devours wishes.
  • Wish's animation was first intended to be entirely traditional, but the filmmakers blended it with computer animation after deciding that 2D alone had too many limitations in camera movements and characterization.
  • Composer Dave Metzger cited Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Sleeping Beauty (1959) as the main sources of inspiration for Wish's character and setting designs, and Sleeping Beauty also led to the decision to present the film in a 2.55:1 aspect ratio.
  • At Chris Buck's request, Dave Metzger wove the first five notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star", Disney's signature song from Pinocchio (1940), into Wish's underscore, using it to move from the studio's 100th anniversary logo into the land of Rosas.
  • Wish took in $255 million worldwide, but Deadline Hollywood calculated that the film lost the studio $131 million once all expenses and revenues were factored together.
