Plot summary
Alex Grady welds cars at an auto plant in Portland, Oregon, and raises his son alone. A shoulder injury three years earlier ended his martial arts career, and now he is picked for the American squad at an international Tae Kwon Do tournament against South Korea. The rest of the team are Tommy Lee, a martial arts teacher from Fresno, California, Travis Brickley, a brash fighter from Miami, Virgil Keller, a Buddhist from Providence, Rhode Island, and Sonny Grasso, a Detroit fighter who knows the streets. Frank Couzo, a veteran trainer, coaches them, and their chances look poor, since the Korean side trains the whole year with full national funding. Catherine Wade arrives as a second assistant coach; her spiritual methods clash with Couzo's rigorous ones, and Travis goads his teammates, keeping the group apart.
