Harry Rosenthal

Biography

Harry Rosenthal was a Belfast-born orchestra leader, composer, pianist and actor. In the 1920s he had a successful London career as a composer, bandleader and pianist, writing five operettas that met with success. By 1929 he was in the United States, writing songs for Herbert Stothart's Broadway musical Polly, and in 1930 he acted in Ring Lardner and George S. Kaufman's June Moon, revived in 1933. He also accompanied Edward, the Prince of Wales, on a world tour. His film career spanned 1931 to 1948 and 19 films, with roles as pianists, orchestra leaders and occasionally non-musical parts. He composed music for The Sin of Harold Diddlebock and conducted on For Me and My Gal. In the early 1940s he joined Preston Sturges' unofficial stock company, appearing in all his films from The Great McGinty (1940) to The Sin of Harold Diddlebock (1947), except Hail the Conquering Hero. He died in 1953.
