Plot summary

Windward, a town on a Puget Sound island, has few tourists, and its family businesses are struggling. Annie McBride left painting in Paris behind and came home when her father fell ill; she now runs McBride's Diner. Matt Duval runs Duval Boulangerie, and the two have been best friends since childhood. Mayor Walter Rasmussen, always hunting ways to draw visitors, sees an opening when Kathryn Dean brings a ballet troupe from Seattle to rehearse in town. Matt is drawn to Nicole, the troupe's lead dancer, while Philip Chandler has his eye on Annie. Matt's bread, once merely adequate, becomes extraordinary, and his father Jean Pierre Duval credits love. Annie thinks Matt is chasing an impossible ideal of perfection.
