Plot summary
Kathy Barrett runs Kathryn's Kafé in Hope Springs, New York, and looks after the whole town while her own house goes without heat, the roof leaking and a step broken. Her husband, a handyman, died of cancer. She brings lunch to Theo and Mel at their resale clothing shop, Reclaimed Rags, where Mel tells how she and Theo came together and gives her a red scarf, saying it was destined for her and urging her to welcome good things. Walking home, Kathy drapes the scarf over a muscular snowman at the town's snow sculpture competition. That night he comes to life and pulls overalls and galoshes from the racks. In the morning Kathy finds him chatting with the other snowmen and takes him into her diner, where a name tag on the overalls gives him the name Jack.
