Plot summary
The psychologist Patricia Agnew wrote a best seller about marriage. She and her husband Gavin join three other couples, friends from college, on a week-long vacation each year. This year all four marriages are strained. Dianne, an attorney, answers her phone rather than talk with her husband Terry. Angela belittles Marcus. Mike is cruel to his wife Sheila and flirts with Trina, Sheila's friend.

- Perry cut many of the church and message scenes from the stage version because he wanted the film to be "on a whole 'nother spiritual level--there's a whole 'nother connection to it", and he said his writing had improved since the play.
- The film opened at number one with $21.4 million in 3,105 theaters in the United States and Canada, slipped to number two the next weekend with $12.1 million for a ten-day total over $38 million, and finished with $55,862,886 domestically.
- Though the story is set at a mountain retreat, filming spanned two countries: Georgia, where scenes were shot at Agnes Scott College in Decatur and around Atlanta, and British Columbia, where the crew worked in the city of Vancouver, Pemberton and Whistler.
- In June 2021 Perry entertained the idea of revisiting the franchise with a film called Why Did I Get Married Again; the sequel was confirmed in a Netflix slate announcement in January 2026 and released on Netflix on 9 September 2026.
