Plot summary
Joseph Macroon, the postmaster on the Hebridean island of Todday, has two daughters. Peggy is engaged to Sergeant Odd, a soldier in the Home Guard unit commanded by Captain Waggett, and Catriona hopes to marry George Campbell, the schoolteacher, whose mother is against the match. The island feels few wartime shortages until the whisky runs out, and Macroon has told Odd that island custom demands a rèiteach, a betrothal ceremony, which cannot be held without the drink. When the SS Cabinet Minister, a cargo ship carrying fifty thousand cases of Scotch to New York, goes aground in fog, the islanders plan to salvage the cargo after the Sabbath. Waggett hears of it and sends Odd to stand guard.

- Producer Iain Maclean raised £400,000 in private investment to develop the remake, but after writer Bill Bryden was fired and Peter McDougall's script for a planned 2006 shoot went unproduced, producers Stephen Evans and Ed Crozier had left by 2010.
- In 2012 Maclean had to let his company Whisky Galore Development slip into administration, and revived the film in 2014 when Irish farmer and businessman Peter Drayne agreed to finance it completely, provided it started from scratch.
