Plot summary
Rebecca Bloomwood works at a gardening magazine in New York, but the fashion title Alette is where she wants to be. On her way to an interview there, she tries to buy a green scarf and her card is declined, so a stranger named Luke Brandon gives her the twenty dollars she is short. At Alette she learns the job was filled from within, though Successful Saving, a financial magazine, has an opening, and Luke is the editor who interviews her. His assistant brings in the scarf Rebecca had hidden outside, and she leaves. That night she and her friend Suze drink and write letters to both magazines, then mail each one to the wrong address.

- Re-shoots took place in New York City on November 24 and 28, 2008, to change the ending so that it would be more sympathetic to audiences during a time of recession.
- John Lithgow turned down the role of Edgar West twice before accepting it. Fred Armisen was approached for West in the meantime, and once Lithgow changed his mind the Ryan Koenig role was written for Armisen; Ed Helms, cast as Derek Smeath, lost the part to scheduling conflicts and shot the Garret role in one day.
- The production created a group of faux upscale brand stores at the base of the Hearst Tower, with labels such as Valentino, Anna Sui, Catherine Malandrino and Alberta Ferretti present.
- The film changed its heroine's nationality from the source novels, adopting the American title Confessions of a Shopaholic and reworking the originally English character Rebecca as an American.
