Plot summary
Kya Clark is a child in 1953 when her mother and siblings leave the shack on a North Carolina marsh one at a time. She sells mussels to the general store in Barkley Cove, where Mabel and Jumpin' Madison look after her, and the townspeople call her the Marsh Girl. Tate Walker, a friend a little older than she is, lends her books and helps her learn to read and write. He leaves for college and does not come back. As a young woman, Kya takes up with Chase Andrews, the celebrated quarterback of Barkley Cove, who promises her marriage. She sells her drawings of marsh life to cover the overdue taxes on the family home. When Chase is found dead, Kya is charged with murder, and the retired attorney Tom Milton comes to hear her story.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Taylor Swift wrote and recorded "Carolina" before the film had even started production. She had read Delia Owens' novel years earlier, and on hearing it was being adapted she set out to make something "haunting and ethereal"; every other track on the soundtrack was made in post-production.
- The title is a phrase Kya's mother uses in the story, and crawdads, which are crayfish, cannot actually sing. Delia Owens borrowed the line from her own mother, who told her as a child to go "way out yonder where the crawdads sing".
