Plot summary
Vic and Melinda Van Allen live in the small Louisiana town of Little Wesley with their daughter Trixie. Their marriage runs on a precarious arrangement: they sleep apart, Melinda takes lovers openly, and Vic keeps a large collection of snails. Their friends watch with concern as Vic's jealousy grows. Melinda brings her latest lover, Joel, to a neighbor's party, and when the two men are alone Vic tells him he murdered Martin, a previous lover of Melinda's who has disappeared. The story spreads through their circle and raises the suspicions of Don Wilson, a writer of noir novels. Joel visits the house for dinner, and Vic privately says he killed Martin with a hammer, which drives Joel out of town.
