Plot summary
Michele is a young Neapolitan, a graduate in the humanities, nearing the end of his military service in Civitavecchia, where he has built a small circle of friendships and bonds. He keeps to himself and has little interest in success or visibility. His father, a successful lawyer in Rome, arrives in the town for a short visit, hoping to reconnect with a son he has left largely alone for years. He brings lavish gifts prepared in the capital, and Michele finds them embarrassing. The one thing he prizes is an old silver watch that once belonged to his grandfather, who worked on the railways, and it brings back childhood scenes of family warmth.
