Plot summary
Campbell Babbitt, a reporter carrying ethical baggage of his own, travels to Concord, New Hampshire, for the coming Challenger shuttle launch in January 1986, whose crew includes a local teacher, Christa McAuliffe. Babbitt tries to reach an old college friend and finds him dead. He stays, hoping to write about a teacher who left a permanent mark on the school's misfits, and falls in with the dead man's high-school students. They are a dysfunctional set: Lucy, a narcissistic seductress; Jim, a repressed voyeur; and Tess, a pregnant schemer. The reporter ends up learning from them rather than the other way around.
