Plot summary
In 1940, Captain Terence Stevenson defuses unexploded bombs for the British Army in London. Since he studied chemical engineering and speaks Romanian and German fluently, his superiors send him on a mission behind enemy lines. He parachutes into Romania as Jan Tartu, a Romanian chemical engineer, and travels toward Czechoslovakia posing as a German sympathizer. There his task is to obtain a new Nazi poison gas formula and destroy the factory that makes it. His shoemaker contact is arrested in a Gestapo raid before he can put Tartu in touch with the underground. In a German uniform, Tartu works as a foreman at a munitions plant and is billeted with Anna Palacek, whose daughter Pavla works there, the German Inspector Otto Vogel, and Maruschka Lanova, who courts the favor of the German officers.
