Granville Bates
Biography
Granville Bates was an American actor who specialized in character parts and bit roles, appearing in more than ninety films. Born in Chicago, he grew up in the city's Lakeview neighborhood and began his screen career in the 1910s with Essanay Studios, part of the early Chicago film industry. His World War I draft card described him as a traveling actor with Francis Owen and Co. In the late 1920s and early 1930s he performed on Broadway, including the original production of Merrily We Roll Along in 1934 and as the Conductor in Twentieth Century in 1932. From the 1930s he took character parts in classic films, sometimes without credit. He drew favorable attention as an irascible judge in My Favorite Wife (1940), with New York Times critic Bosley Crowther singling out the performance, and Crowther also praised him in Men Against the Sky (1940). Bates died in 1940.
