Plot summary
In 1960s Ireland, a river and a white line painted on the bridge across it separate the villages of Ballydowse and Carrickdowse. The boys of the two places have long carried on a war, seizing the buttons from the clothes of their rivals. Fergus, a weak student from a poor family who lives with his mother and stepfather in a trailer, leads the working-class Ballys. Jerome, from a wealthy family and nicknamed Geronimo after the Apache chief, leads the middle-class Carricks. Marie, one of the Ballys, recalls the feud years later as an adult. The sides compete over everything from hospital raffle tickets to the definition of a tosspot, and the button raids go on.
