Plot summary
Howard Wakefield works as an attorney in New York City and is unhappy in his fifteen-year marriage to Diana, an art curator who once danced professionally. One night a power outage delays his commute home, and in his driveway he spots a raccoon slipping into the detached garage. He chases it up into the garage attic, where he finds he can look straight into the house and watch Diana and their daughters, Taylor and Giselle, eat dinner. Diana calls; he lets the phone ring and watches her throw his plate away. Rather than go inside, he waits, and falls asleep. Come morning, he decides Diana would never believe he spent the night in the garage, and stays out of sight while she leaves for work. When she reports him missing, her mother, Babs, arrives to comfort her.
