Plot summary

Arthur Lempereur has a fortune and no interest in living, and every attempt he makes to end his life comes to nothing. He travels to Hong Kong hoping that a change of scene will cure his depression, and there he finds that his money is gone. Mister Goh, a philosopher who was once his tutor, has Arthur take out a life insurance policy that names Alice, Arthur's fiancée, and Goh himself as the people who would benefit, and Goh promises to kill him. Arthur meets Alexandrine, a striptease dancer who works as an ethnologist. He changes his mind about dying, and sets out to find Goh before Goh's promise is carried out.
