Plot summary
Queen Cleopatra and Julius Caesar argue about whether the Egyptian people can achieve great things, and she makes a wager: a splendid palace for him will stand in Alexandria in three months. She gives the task to her finest architect, Numerobis, and tells him success brings gold, failure the crocodiles. Numerobis believes no ordinary effort can meet the deadline without magic, so he sails to Gaul and asks the druid Panoramix for help. Panoramix comes back to Egypt with him, and Asterix and Obelix join the journey, Obelix bringing the dog Idefix. Numerobis is not a gifted builder, and his rival Amonbofis offers to work with him on the palace and split the reward. Numerobis refuses, and Amonbofis swears revenge.
