Plot summary
Marie Fitzgerald O'Malley, known as Maria II, is the daughter of an Irish republican anarchist. She assisted him in bombings against the British government. In Central America in 1907 she must blow up a bridge, and her father is killed in the shootout that follows. She escapes and hides in the wagon of Maria I, a French vaudeville singer in a traveling circus. Maria I has lost her partner, so they form a song-and-dance act. During their first show Maria II's skirt rips, and the accident turns their number into a striptease that makes them stars.

- Dallas, Texas banned Viva Maria! for its sexual and anti-Catholic content; the ban was lifted by default in 1968 when the United States Supreme Court struck it down and limited how municipalities could ban films for adults.
- An extra was killed during the Mexican shoot of Viva Maria! when he fell off an ox cart, and production was also held up when star Brigitte Bardot fell ill.
- The final minute of Viva Maria!, showing the women singing a Spanish song on stage, was cut after the film's New York premiere; MGM archivist John Kirk restored it for the 1998 LaserDisc release.
