Jess Hahn

Biography

Jess Hahn was an American actor whose career was spent largely in French cinema, where he was a popular character actor cast as physically imposing figures, gangsters, and military men. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, he studied English and physical education at Murray State University, then served in the U.S. Army as a physical instructor during the Second World War. He settled in Paris in 1949, worked as a jazz musician, and made his film debut in 1953 in La môme vert-de-gris opposite Eddie Constantine as Lemmy Caution. He took supporting parts in crime dramas, film noirs, and westerns, a rare lead in Éric Rohmer's The Sign of Leo (1962), and strong man roles in Cartouche and Topkapi (1964). He also appeared in the theater, toured in The Odd Couple in 1968, and retired in 1989, his last role coming in the television film Le retour de Lemmy Caution.
