Plot summary
Hat Creek sits in New Mexico desert country, where cattle are turning up half-eaten and the farmers blame a wolf. Sheriff Annie Flynn, an alcoholic, is called out to view the remains and to handle a tanker truck left blocking the road, so the government will pay. A group of travelers runs out of gas and is told to spend the night at the station. At the same time, an archaeological excavation in the area has disturbed something buried long ago. With people going missing and a strange piece of evidence in hand, Annie takes it to Nodin, who studies it. Caya, Kale and the stranded travelers search for a way to stop what was dug up.
