Plot summary
The canceled Apollo 18 mission is revived two years after Apollo 17 as a classified Department of Defense flight. Commander Nathan Walker, Lieutenant Colonel John Grey and Captain Ben Anderson are sent to install a detector on the Moon that would give early warning of Soviet missile launches. Grey remains in orbit aboard the command module Freedom while Walker and Anderson touch down in the lunar module Liberty. Anderson collects rock samples to bring back. Small disturbances aboard the lander follow, which Houston blames on the detector. The next day the pair find footprints leading to an abandoned Soviet lander, and a dead cosmonaut in a nearby crater. At night, a strange noise wakes Walker, and an object bumps the lander.

- Dimension Films boss Bob Weinstein kept up the pretence that the Moon footage was genuine while promoting the picture, balking at the idea that it was fiction and telling Entertainment Weekly the crew had found it rather than shot it.
- The closing claim about vanished Moon rocks is true. The Nixon and Ford administrations handed out 135 Apollo 11 rocks and 135 Apollo 17 goodwill rocks, and the Moon Rock Project, run by more than 1,000 graduate students since 2002, found 160 of them unaccounted for, lost or destroyed.
