Plot summary
The Lomacks and the Dolans are neighboring farm families in rural Pennsylvania, and their long-running feud has worsened as both sides struggle for money. George Lomack, a single father with a failing auto repair business, needs income for his daughters Heather and Kim. Patriot Exploration, which drills for natural gas, offers to lease his land, and George takes the deal. Kathryn Dolan, the Dolan matriarch, is appalled, and the bad feeling between the households deepens. When the company moves in its equipment and starts work on the Lomack property, daily life for both families is disrupted. Then the usual sounds of wildlife outside their homes go quiet, and the two households begin to suffer a strange illness that first makes them scratch at their skin.
