Toni Kalem
Biography
Toni Kalem is an American director, screenwriter and character actress. She was born in the New Jersey suburbs, started acting in the late 1970s, and got her first major role as Despie in The Wanderers (1979). She also appeared in soap operas and television, and her best-known role was Angie Bonpensiero on The Sopranos (1999), the long-suffering wife. Kalem admired Anne Tyler's novel A Slipping-Down Life, which she came across while she was a secretary at Random House. She optioned the book in 1984 and spent fifteen years trying to get it made, finally directing and writing the screenplay for the film A Slipping-Down Life (1999). She wrote for The Sopranos as well. She has often been cast as hard-edged Italian-American women.
