Plot summary
In the early 1960s, Bobby Fantana, a young rebel, races Joe Barnes in a game of chicken after Joe makes a pass at Bobby's girlfriend Emily. Bobby wins, but his bracelet snags on the gearshift and his car goes over the cliff. He wakes aboard a train bound for a station where an escalator leads to Uptown, and Rafferty turns him away: he has to complete an assignment first, and until then Midtown is where he stays. Years later Rafferty brings him back to Earth as a guardian angel for Lenny Barnes, a promising student who is picked on by Fred Gallo and Bill McIntyre. Bobby is allowed to show himself to Lenny and no one else. He gives Lenny a makeover, helps him deal with Fred and Bill, and helps him win Sharon.
