Plot summary
Kate Carter chases storms in Oklahoma with Javi, Addy, Praveen and her boyfriend Jeb. They launch barrels of sodium polyacrylate beads at a tornado to reduce its intensity and win funding for further research. Five years on, Kate now works out of a NOAA office in New York City. Javi, employed by the mobile radar company Storm Par, offers her a week with his team to test a 3D tornado scanning system, and she accepts after he sends a news report of a town destroyed by a tornado.

- Universal rejected a Twister sequel plan from Helen Hunt, who starred in the 1996 film; her version, written with Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs of Blindspotting, would have followed all Black and brown storm chasers in a rocket science club at a historically Black college.

Two endings were filmed for Twisters: one in which Kate and Tyler kiss, and the one used, in which they do not. Steven Spielberg suggested the non-kiss take to keep Kate's arc about rediscovering her passion for storm chasing.- A real storm with 80-mile-per-hour winds wrecked the El Reno farmer's market set, so the crew rebuilt the 40-vendor market so they could destroy it again for a scene.
- Lee Isaac Chung decided to approach Glen Powell for a lead role after seeing him on the Today show; Powell, then filming Anyone but You in Australia, did a chemistry read over Zoom with Daisy Edgar-Jones.
- To win the directing job, Lee Isaac Chung pitched Frank Marshall, Steven Spielberg and Ashley Jay Sandberg with a presentation that intercut footage from Twister with his own Minari, a $2 million indie drama, specifically a scene of characters under a tornado watch.
- The tornadoes were made with wind fans running at around 70 miles per hour and two jet engines set further from the sets at 170-to-180 miles per hour, plus dump tanks, high-pressure water cannons and polyacrylamide standing in for hail.
- Twisters debuted to $81.3 million, the best-ever opening weekend for a natural disaster film, surpassing The Day After Tomorrow (2004).
- The finale's tornado was inspired by three real storms: the 2013 El Reno tornado, the 2021 Western Kentucky tornado, and a wedge tornado that struck Kansas in 2023.
