Noel Ferrier
Biography
Noel Ferrier was an Australian actor, comedian and television personality who also produced for the stage, with a theater career of more than fifty years. Born in Melbourne in 1930, he joined the country's first professional repertory company, the Union Theatre Repertory Company, and was the first to play Roo in the debut staging of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. He was the original host of the Seven Network's The Late Show, and he hosted a Friday-night In Melbourne Tonight from 1963 to 1965, which in 1964 won a Logie as Victoria's most popular program. Later stage work included playing Herod in a touring Jesus Christ Superstar and serving as artistic director of the Marian Street Theatre in 1988. His films included Alvin Purple, Turkey Shoot (1982), The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) and Eliza Fraser, which brought a Best Actor nomination from the Australian Film Institute. He became a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989.

A first
Ferrier was the interviewer at the first onstage appearance of Barry Humphries's character Mrs. Norm Everage, later known as Dame Edna Everage, in 1956.
Behind the camera
At the Comedy Theatre, Ferrier starred as Humpty Dumpty and the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, which he produced for JC Williamson between December 1961 and February 1962.

In 1982, Ferrier founded the Elizabethan Theatre Trust's musical theater division. He produced a revival of Sound of Music with Julie Anthony and a restaging of Pirates of Penzance featuring Jon English.
Getting ready for a role
Ferrier played Herod in Harry M. Miller's 1994 to 1995 touring revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, and needed two chorus girls to guide him down the huge staircase set.
