Plot summary
In 1991, Iraqi commandos break into a hidden American government laboratory and set genetically modified rattlesnakes loose. The snakes breed and multiply over the years that follow. An earthquake then pushes them up from underground around Santa Mira Springs, California, and their bites spread a fatal virus that victims can pass on to healthy people. The military quarantines the town, while local physicians, among them Dr. David Henning, Dr. Christine Edmonton Henning and Dr. Eric Foreman, try to control the epidemic. Maj. Gen. Thomas Sparks and Gen. Arthur Manchek want the virus kept secret and the traces of the government's earlier work hidden.
