Plot summary
In Wiggly, Georgia, in 1977, Christmas Flint and other elementary-school outcasts form a Birdie Scout troop of their own. Christmas wants the winning troop's voices put on the Voyager Golden Record so that life in outer space might hear them, a thought her late mother encouraged. Only one troop number in the state remains unassigned, and the Birdie leader, Krystal Massey, gives it to them as an insult; the girls, plus one boy, take zero to mean infinity. Since a troop mother is required, they recruit Rayleen, who works as secretary to Christmas's father and shares a history with Krystal Massey. To be allowed into the talent show, each member must first earn a badge.
