Plot summary
Tom Heath is a withdrawn teenager in South London. His mother Mary disapproves of music, blaming it for the failed career of Tom's father Chris, so Tom practices in secret and endures bullying at school from Damien and other classmates. He carries scars from past self-harm and has used the guitar to cope. When a tenant moves into the council flat below, Tom recognizes him as Max Stone, an American guitarist who disappeared years ago and is presumed dead. Max wants to be left alone and refuses to teach him, so Tom threatens to expose his identity unless he gives him lessons.
