Plot summary
Galadriel Hopkins, known as Gilly, is twelve and has never laid eyes on her birth mother. She has been passed between foster homes and has gotten the better of the families that took her in. Her newest placement is with Maime Trotter, a woman who wants to take on the role of a parent for her. Gilly does not make it simple: she causes trouble rather than accept the care she is offered. She also works on a plan aimed at her birth mother, Courtney Rutherford Hopkins, and believes it will draw her mother to her. Trotter goes on offering a home while Gilly holds her at a distance.
