Plot summary
Lane Speer is sixteen and has spent family vacations camping in the mountains with her parents. Her father dies of cancer, and a year afterward her mother marries a man Lane barely knows, a Mormon. While the newlyweds honeymoon, they arrange for Lane to lodge with her new Mormon step-aunt, who brings her to a week-long girls' Bible camp. Lane reluctantly goes, and her step-cousin Phoebe goes with her. At camp the girls' first job is to raise their tepees; most of them rush through it to reach the lake, while Lane and Phoebe take their time. Phoebe has smuggled her dog Roxy along and asks the others to keep quiet about it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Once I Was a Beehive (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The bear that raids the camp was not an effect: the production hired a trained grizzly named Tank, supplied by Wasatch Rocky Mountain Wildlife of Heber City, Utah, and shot those scenes with him on location.
- The film's Noah's Ark prop was built by a local woodcrafter and then went missing for a while on the way to the set, because nobody had fastened it to the vehicle carrying it.
